The Federal Subsistence Board (Board) recognizes that indigenous Tribes of Alaska are spiritually, physically, culturally, and historically connected to the land, the wildlife and the waters. To effectively manage the Federal Subsistence Management Program, the Board consults with Federally recognized Tribes in Alaska whenever its actions may affect a Tribe, its members, or resources. Government-to-government consultation undertaken through the Board’s process is a direct two-way communication conducted in good faith to secure meaningful participation in the decision-making process. Highlights of this enhanced form of communication will be shared, as well as the why, who and when of Tribal and ANSCA corporation consultation on federal subsistence issues. Helpful tips for being effective before, during and after consultation will also be offered.
